GO-QoL: Frequently Asked Questions
The Graves’ Orbitopathy Quality of Life questionnaire (GO-QoL) is a disease-specific patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) designed to assess the impact of Graves’ orbitopathy on patients’ daily functioning and wellbeing. It contains 16 items across two subscales: Visual Functioning (items 1–7) and Appearance (items 8–15), with higher scores reflecting better quality of life.
The GO-QoL was developed by Prof. Caroline Terwee under the supervision of Prof. Wilmar Wiersinga at the Academic Medical Center (AMC), Amsterdam, and first published in 1998. It was developed in Dutch is now available in more than 20 languages and is widely used in clinical practice and research worldwide.
The original Dutch version of the GO-QOL has undergone rigorous psychometric testing and showed sufficient structural validity, construct validity, test-retest reliability, and responsiveness. Some validation studies of other language versions of the GO-QOL have been performed, but a systematic overview is not yet available.

Licensing and Fees
No. The GO-QoL is free to use for clinical, academic, and research purposes. EUGOGO has always made the instrument freely available, and this policy continues. Its wide adoption across more than 20 languages is in large part a result of this open-access approach.

Important disclaimer on translation quality
EUGOGO can vouch for the translation quality of the English and Polish language versions only. All other translations (including the other English versions) posted on this website have been submitted by their developers attesting that the EUGOGO SOP was followed. EUGOGO has not independently reviewed or verified those translations and does not accept responsibility for the accuracy of any translation other than the English and Polish versions. Users relying on other language versions for clinical trials or regulatory submissions should review the accompanying documentation themselves and conduct their own assessment of translation quality.
EUGOGO has a formal Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the translation and cultural adaptation of the GO-QoL, developed in accordance with ISPOR good practice guidelines and US FDA guidance on PRO measures. In summary, the required steps are:
- Two independent forward translations into the target language, by native speakers of that language who are fluent in English.
- Reconciliation of the two translations into a single preliminary version by a panel of clinical and linguistic experts.
- Back translation into English by an independent translator who has not seen the original English version.
- Back translation review — any discrepancies resolved in consultation with the translation team.
- Cognitive debriefing with at least 5 native-speaking patients diagnosed with Graves’ Orbitopathy, assessing clarity, comprehension, and cultural relevance; revision as needed.
- Final external review by a specialist in PRO translation or clinical linguistics, ensuring content and formatting are consistent with the original.
- Full documentation maintained throughout all steps, including all translation versions, patient feedback, reconciliation notes, and back translation review decisions.
- Submission to EUGOGO of the final version together with the complete documentation package demonstrating that each step of the SOP has been followed. EUGOGO will list the version on this website on the basis of that documentation. EUGOGO does not independently review the translation itself. Further validation of the translated version and publication in a peer-reviewed journal is strongly encouraged.
You must organise and fund the translation process yourselves, following the EUGOGO SOP at every stage. EUGOGO does not manage, fund, or independently review translations on behalf of third parties. To have your version listed on this website, you must submit the completed translation together with the full documentation package showing that each step of the SOP was completed. Listing on the website does not constitute EUGOGO endorsement of the translation’s quality.
